IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN….
Smooth and Easy—Flat Walk, Running Walk, Canter.
The natural four-beat gait of the Tennessee Walking Horse provides a smoother ride than that of a horse that trots or paces. The smooth ride results from over stride in a 4-beat walking motion that is unique only to the Tennessee Walking Horse. Many Walkers are also able to perform the stepping pace, rack, fox trot and single footing, which all variations of the famous running walk. Any of these gaits are smooth, easy, trail riding gaits.
The running walk and flat walk are both natural, loose four cornered gaits with each foot hitting the ground separately at regular intervals. The gait is natural and requires no training, the intermediate gait is apparent from the time a young foal starts to walk besides its mother.
They have earned a reputation of being a loyal and affectionate animal which is intelligent, even tempered and very forgiving. They can be reassuring mounts for learner riders.
Selective breeding started establishing the breed in the 1600's by crossing early Colonial Morgans, Standardbreds, Saddlebreds, and the now extinct Narragansett and Canadian Pacers.
These horses make ideal all round pleasure riding mounts. They are versatile and are commonly seen in the show ring, parades & trick riding, endurance, trekking or trail riding, ranching, riding for disabled, driving, western or english pleasure, and hunting.
They are naturally built uphill and have tons of reach, and are becoming a very popular cross for dressage with their athleticism, trainability and multi-gaited ability.
